Embedded heat sensors in fire suits
VIKING Life-Saving Equipment, a market leader in protective equipment for fire-fighters (amongst others) has introduced a thermal sensor in their full range of fire suits. The temperature sensor registers heat distribution inside and outside the suit – and if a fire-fighter is in imminent danger, provides a warning signal in a display on the sleeve and on the shoulder of the jacket.
If temperatures rise rapidly, the suit generates a warning signal much more quickly than if temperatures rise slowly, since this also necessitates that fire-fighters withdraw more rapidly.
In collaboration with VIKING, Ohmatex developed the first prototype of the product in 2007. The sensors are fully integrated into the garment in a water tight label designed for easy sewing to the garment.
